More than just design

At augustwenty, our logo is more than just a design—it’s a reflection of our values, our journey, and how we approach our work with clients. As DJ, Matthew Righter, and Beth Shaheen discussed in episode five of Caffeine with DJ podcast, the logo represents our company’s identity and the thoughtfulness we bring to everything we do.

In the early days, we didn’t start with a fully fleshed-out concept. In fact, the process of creating the logo mirrored our collaborative and innovative approach as a company. Initially, our logo was a square, but over time, it evolved into the circle that you see today—a symbol that holds deep meaning for us.

The Circle: Equality and Collaboration

The circular shape of the logo wasn’t an arbitrary choice. As we worked through various designs, the circle began to represent equality and collaboration. Much like the Knights of the Round Table, the circle symbolizes that everyone—whether team members or clients—has an equal seat at the table. We don’t believe in rigid hierarchies, but rather in collaborative partnerships that foster mutual growth.

The Crescent: A Nod to Our Roots

The crescent shape, formed by the inner white circle and the surrounding black border, is a subtle but intentional nod to the harvest moon of August. As a company that was formed in August, this symbol reminds us of our beginnings and keeps us grounded in our origin story. It’s a constant visual reminder that the values we started with—integrity, excellence, and intention—are still guiding us today.

The Tail of the “A”: Pushing Boundaries

One of the unique features of the logo is how the tail of the lowercase “A” extends beyond the boundary of the circle. This wasn’t just a stylistic choice; it represents our commitment to thinking outside of the box—or in this case, outside the circle. We believe in pushing boundaries, both in the way we work with clients and how we approach problem-solving. However, the tail doesn’t stray too far, symbolizing our balanced approach: innovating without overwhelming our clients.

The Shared “T”: Unity in Partnership

When we named the company “augustwenty,” it was initially two words with two T’s. However, we ended up using a shared T between “august” and “twenty” for both practical and symbolic reasons. Not only was the domain name more accessible this way, but the shared T also represents the unity between us and our clients. We’re partners in every sense of the word, working together to achieve shared goals.

Colors: Bold, Crisp, and Clear

Our color palette—orange, dark gunmetal gray, white, and light blue—was carefully chosen for its boldness and versatility. Orange, reminiscent of the harvest moon, evokes energy, creativity, and warmth. The dark gray and white provide a clean, crisp backdrop, ensuring our logo is striking no matter where it’s displayed, whether it’s on marketing materials, conference swag, or even a shirt.

Final Thoughts

Our logo isn’t just a mark. It’s a visual story that encapsulates who we are, what we believe in, and how we approach our work. As DJ pointed out during the podcast, every time we meet with a client, the first question they often ask is about the story behind the name and the logo. This curiosity allows us to share our values and start meaningful conversations that go beyond business.

Four years in, our logo still excites us. It stands as a testament to the care, creativity, and intentionality we bring to everything we do at augustwenty.

That’s the story behind our logo. We hope you enjoyed learning more about it, and we’re excited to continue building with the same level of thoughtfulness and care that went into creating this symbol.
